Our History:

The Palisade Apartments has been a part of the Miles City community for decades, built on the vision and dedication of local businessman Howard Anderson.

After purchasing the hillside property in 1954, Howard spent years preparing and levelling the land, building roads and planning what would become one of Miles City’s most recognizable apartment communities. Construction began in 1962, and Howard personally oversaw every aspect of the project. Built primarily from concrete for durability and fire resistance, the apartment complex was thoughtfully designed so as many residents as possible could enjoy sweeping views of the Yellowstone River Valley.

Howard was no stranger to hard work. As the owner of Miles City RediMix for more than 40 years, he supplied much of the concrete used throughout the region, including The Palisade Apartments. His resourcefulness is reflected throughout the property as many reclaimed materials from local landmarks were incorporated in decoration and construction. In the large “party room” Howard used an old concrete drum to create an open fireplace, as well as beams from an old Yellowstone River bridge to support the ceiling. Today, the ballroom is home to many plants that bask in the beautiful sun.

Together with his wife, JoLynn Anderson, the property became more than an apartment complex. JoLynn devoted countless hours to creating the beautifully landscaped grounds, complete with mature trees, waterfalls and inviting outdoor spaces that the residents have enjoyed for generations. While the waterfalls and pool have been long closed, we fondly remember them through the many photos of the grounds.

Howard was also a man of deep Christian faith. His belief in the Lord guided the way he lived, worked and served others. Known throughout the community for his honesty, generosity, and unwavering integrity, he believed in treating people with kindness and keeping his word. His life reflected the values of hard work, humility, and service that continue to inspire those that knew him. He was deeply committed to improving his home town, his “favorite town.” He donated his time, resources, and talents to countless community projects, earning a reputation for a man whose “word was as good as gold.”

Howard passed away in 1993, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Miles City through the businesses he built, the countless community projects he supported, and the apartment community he so carefully created. JoLynn faithfully carried that legacy forward for more than three decades, while adding a bit of fun of her own. A longtime lover of birds, JoLynn had several resident ducks that lived in the building and frequented the ponds on the property. She honored her and Howards tradition of the “Deer Diner” leaving corn out for the resident deer, turkeys and other wildlife on the property, and continued to care for the apartments and its residents until her passing in 2026.

Today, The Palisade Apartments proudly continues their legacy through owner Ryan Oddy and family. We are proud to preserve the vision Howard and JoLynn created by providing clean, comfortable, and well-maintained apartment homes while preserving the history, character, and sense of community they worked so hard to create. We are honored to carry their vision into the future and welcome each new resident to a place that has been built with care, integrity and lasting purpose.
